Lucas watched from the doorway until Sacha had rounded the corner, then he walked back through the house to check from the deck that she’d got home safely. It wasn’t dark yet, but he hated the thought of her on the streets at night. With relief, he saw a light go on and her silhouette before she closed the curtains.

He was stuck in a place that wouldn’t allow him to make her promises. He shouldn’t have slept with her, but try as he might, he couldn’t regret it. Every second of that night was indelibly etched on his mind but it was a mistake because now he wanted her more in ways he couldn’t deal with. He had his sister and his work and there would soon be even less time to share with another person.

He turned in time to see Maddie whisper in Sam’s ear and he saw red.

“Are you two about finished there?”

Every time he’d been in to the hospital to see Maddie, Sam was either there or about to arrive and the guy couldn’t take a hint. Even here, he was going to outstay his welcome and Lucas had had enough.

Sam finally got the message. He rose to his feet, dropping Maddie’s hand like a guilty schoolboy, while she handed him the laptop.

“I think we’ve covered everything for today unless either of you have any more questions?” he asked politely.

“I’m sure you have been more than thorough.” Lucas stood by the door scowling at him.

“Is Sacha in the kitchen?”

“No, she got tired of waiting for you and left.”

“Oh, right.” Sam scrambled together the rest of his papers. “See you at the

housewarming, then.” He bent towards Maddie, meaning to give her a kiss goodbye, but Lucas moved into his line of vision, so he squeezed her hand and gave her an apologetic smile before making his escape.

As soon as the door closed, Maddie rounded on her brother. “I can’t believe how rude you are, Lucas! How dare you treat my friends that way.”

“He works for us, Maddie. Anything more than that is unprofessional.”

“Don’t be like that. Sam is very professional. Hasn’t he met all the deadlines?

Lucas, I have to have friends. I need them.”

“Of course you do, and once we get settled in the house we’ll invite people around.” Lucas put his arm across her shoulders and gently cuddled her to him.

“What people? People you know, your friends? I want my own friends.” Her voice was muffled in his shoulder as she struggled against him.

“Lynn’s your friend, and what about Keith and Jeremy?” He let her go and dragged his hands through his hair.

“Yes they are, but it’s not what I mean. Besides, Jeremy’s our cousin so that doesn’t count.”

He didn’t understand her anger, but if she was annoyed about him looking out for her, she was going to be really pissed with his next comment.

“I don’t want you getting upset Maddie, but I need to tell you something, and I feel strongly about this. After Saturday I don’t want Sam near the cottage.
